Monsanto’s Roundup-Ready XTend: Dicamba & Roundup. The Poison Treadmill Continues

Use of Roundup has increased because of resistance to super weeds.

To battle the super weed crisis that American farmers have experienced with Roundup’s failure, the FDA approved  GMO (genetically modified) dicamba-resistant soybean & cotton crops.  This follows on the heels of the EPA green light for the “new &  improved” Roundup, Monsanto’s Xtend, a marriage between Roundup and Dicamba.

Dicamba’s been used since the 60’s. There’s one problem.  It’s highly volatile and prone to drift – even up to 72 hours after application –  to fields where it hasn’t been sprayed.

Farmers were told not to spray it directly on crops; only on the soil before planting, for post-emergent weed control. Dicamba has a tendency to drift when airborne,  so instructions were to maintain a sprayer height of 24 inches, adjust nozzles for a larger spray (heavier drops) and avoid use when weather conditions made drift more likely. Because of temperature inversions, night-time spraying was not advised. However, some farmers didn’t heed this advice & sprayed it directly on the GMO crops. In violation of federal pesticide laws, some used an older version of dicamba which is more prone to drift.

A lawsuit was filed on July 19, 2017, against Monsanto, BASF and DuPont by 7 farmers in Arkansas citing crop damage. Approximately of 22% soybean crops were impacted by dicamba drift.  Over 3 million acres have been involved in 16 states, affecting not only farms but residential areas, as well as organic farms.

Missouri and Arkansas have banned the use of Xtend. Damage has been found in Mississippi, Illinois, Tennesee, and other areas of the South.

Monsanto, in its usual nefarious rush toward approval because of greed, didn’t test Xtend for commercial applications to avoid delay in the process.  BSAF limited their testing of their version, Engenia, further allowing scientists to “selectively choose” data for regulators.  “Monsanto, in particular, did very little volatility field work,” said Jason Norsworthy, an agronomy professor at the University of Arkansas.

More disconcerting is that research indicates this new pairing of herbicides may not work for very long. Scientists have found that in just 3 seasons Xtend is no longer effective against superweeds like pigweed.

So guess what?  More applications of Roundup and Dicamba will be needed. Or Monsanto, BASF, DuPont, Bayer or Syngenta will have to come up with another chemical concoction.

The poison treadmill continues.

FDA Approves GMO Salmon

The FDA just approved genetically modified salmon for human consumption.

The FDA just approved genetically modified salmon for human consumption.

GMO salmon was just approved  for human consumption by the FDA as reported by the Center For Food Safety.  This is yet another breach of trust of the American people that the FDA has to offer.

As  I previously reported  on this site 2 years ago, “FDA Says Frankenfish No Different,”  the FDA has obviously ignored the millions of American people, over 40 members of Congress, as well as environmental, large sections of the fishing industry, animal rights activists and restaurant industry and food companies alike.

This is yet another travesty linking the FDA’s total lack of common sense and concern for the American people as well as the environment.

It has become very clear in the past few years that the FDA, along with other agencies designed to protect the people of this country like the EPA and USDA — have been bought and influenced by “Big Food,” Big Ag,” and the chemical and biotech industries.

This has got to stop!

Speaking on behalf of the Center For Food Safety, Executive Director Andrew Kimball said:

“The review process by FDA was inadequate, failed to fully examine the likely impacts of the salmon’s introduction, and lacked a comprehensive analysis. This decision sets a dangerous precedent, lowering the standards of safety in this country. CFS will hold FDA to their obligations to the American people.”

Continuing on,

“FDA has not acted in good faith with the American people. Rather than informing the public, FDA’s announcement appears to be intended to minimize public awareness.”

This is the latest in a string of approvals for federal agencies which will ultimately harm the environment and continue poisoning us.  In February, the EPA approved Dow Chemical’s “Enlist” herbicide:  a combination of glyphosate (Round-Up) and 2-4-D (Atrazine) to combat the weed-resistance CAUSED BY ROUND-UP!

I wrote extensively about this in 2012; the effects on human health of 2-4-D, which is a component of “Agent Orange.”

GMO salmon is just another step in the bastardizing and takeover of our food.

Where will it end?

Aspartame’s Effects On The Body

Aspartame (A.K.A NutraSweet) is found in thousands of foods today.

Aspartame (A.K.A NutraSweet) is found in thousands of foods today.

Aspartame is in so many food products today, it’s almost impossible to avoid.    Try walking down the aisles in your local grocery store; you’ll be hard-pressed to find many products without it!

There are some people who suffer reactions to aspartame.

READ MORE: ASPARTAME = EQUAL, NUTRASWEET = POISON

Many aspartame reactions are often mistaken for diseases   People wonder why they cannot get relief when it would be as simple as omitting aspartame from their diet.

Common diseases that aspartame reactions can mimic are:

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), ALS, Alzheimer’s Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,  EMS, Epstein-Barr, Epilepsy,   Fibromyalgia, Grave’s Disease, Hypothyroidism, non-Hodgkins Lymphoma,  Lupus, Lyme Disease, Meniere’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Post-Polio Syndrome

Aspartame can also cause symptoms such as itching without a rash, hives, tingling in mouth or face, ringing in the ears.

Neurological manifestations of aspartame can be: Epileptic seizures, headaches, migraines, dizziness, unsteadiness, confusion, memory loss, severe drowsiness and sleepiness, numbness of the limbs, severe slurring of speech, hyperactivity and restless legs, atypical facial pain or tremors.

Aspartame is even found in supposed "healthy" foods like yogurt.

Aspartame is even found in supposed “healthy” foods like yogurt.

Vision problems include:  blindness in one or both eyes, decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision, pain in one or both eyes, decreased tears.

Aspartame can heighten depression, cause aggression, personality changes, irritability or exacerbate phobias.

Other reported symptoms include:  Chest palpitations, tachycardia, (rapid heart beat) shortness of breath, high blood pressure.

The makers of Aspartame swear the stuff is safe. It’s from a “natural” source, an amino acid they’ll tell you.   They’ll cite industry-funded studies which is the same as letting the fox into the chicken coop:  lies abound!

Since 1980, following an independent board of inquiry, aspartame was not found to be safe. Additional study on the effects of aspartame were requested to the FDA by  this board. However, with the election of Ronald Regan, a new FDA commissioner was  appointed and aspartame was approved.

What they don’t tell you is that aspartame, although an amino acid (aspartic acid) is an “excitotoxin” meaning that it stimulates cells (excite) to the extent that they die (apoptosis), destroying neurons. In the brain this is not a good thing. Phenyalanine, although found in proteins and as a component of aspartame, when isolated, it becomes neurotoxic, interferes with anti-depressants and other drugs.

Diabetics and the diet-conscious world have been hoodwinked into believing that aspartame is safe. I’ve been verbally attacked for speaking out against NutraSweet and aspartame.  Too bad!  I’ll continue to spread all the information I can regarding aspartame in the hope that there’s one person out there who will think twice about using this poison!

Food Wonderings: Confessions Of A Food Writer

I’ve been researching and writing about what’s in food for almost 10 years now and believe me – it hasn’t left me unscathed.  The last 3 posts I’ve written, “Getting Ripped Off In A Restaurant,” “Sulfites In Food: Sodium Metabisulfite,” and “Meat Glue:  Is Your Steak Real Or Fake,”  have renewed the sense in me of food panic.

That’s right:  food panic, akin to what I had when I read those classics by authors such as Morgan Spurlock (“Don’t Eat This Book-The Supersizing Of America.”) and the mother lode of information about the food industry, “Fast Food Nation” by Eric Schlosser.

The meat glue article I researched a few days ago now has me totally off going into restaurants and ordering what is supposed to be a good cut of steak.  For all I know it’s cobbled together pieces of a lesser cut made out to be the real McCoy of prime steak.  That’s got me freaked out! To know, also, that perhaps unsuspecting restaurant patrons who, for religious reasons, do not eat beef or pork may also be eating it when they order fish cuts.  The fact that we as a country are being lied to left and right by not only our government (read the FDA, USDA and others) who are designed to protect us, but the entire restaurant industry as well.

Bottom line is unless you stay home all the time and cook organic food for yourself there is really no way to know what you are eating.

How many of us do that?

I work part-time in a grocery store.  I’m freaked out about the produce, constantly wondering what’s on it.  (yeah I know – various pesticides) – that’s gotten me off store-bought veggies.

I won’t even buy anything from the meat counter.  Images of cattle, pigs and chickens strung up on assembly line processing conveyors – not to mention how they are raised and what they are fed and them what they are injected with prior to slaughter – scares the crap out of me.

Who are we really supposed to trust?  Can we truly put our faith IN organics?  What about GMO contamination?

We’re supposed to be able to trust the government’s agencies to protect us from unscrupulous food practices but it’s been shown in the past that they can’t even do THIS job effectively.  The FDA is like an old toothless dog. It can’t bite back or even look threatening because of Washington’s lobbyists from Big Food.  As far as I am concerned, the FDA is a waste of time. The USDA is in the same class with the FDA – another toothless wonder mired in bribes and bullshit.  Forget the EPA, too.  They’ve backpedaled on their share of protective efforts – all because of the money in Washington.  This is sickening.

Yeah – I’m feeling kind of hopeless right now.  Scared too, because what are we supposed to do?  The food industry has us by the balls and in the article below by Eric Schlosser, it seems things haven’t gotten any better.

I’m wondering what or what NOT to eat next.  Sometimes I wish I still was ignorant about all of this;  could go back 10 years and not know what I know about food.

The only thing I can do is keep reading labels, trying to limit my intake of suspect foods (which right at the moment is ALL of them!)  and keep passing on information to you in hopes that it makes you more aware. Perhaps you, too, will want to add your voice to the maddening crowd.

Antibacterial Soaps Not Necessary

Antibacterial soaps have been the rage for years.

Antibacterial soaps have been the rage for years.

Whatever happened to good, old-fashioned soap and water?

Antibacterial anything has been the rage for years.

Personally I’ve stayed away from antibacterial stuff. It never seemed like it made much sense: soap naturally kills germs.  Why do I need yet another chemical IN my soap, IN my life?

Germaphobic parents scarf up bottles of antibacterial soap with the notion that they are forming a protective chain around their children and family.

Triclosan, a common ingredient in most antibacterial soaps, may not be such a hot idea to use consistently. Currently the FDA is taking another look at triclosan. They are considering a mandate that requires manufacturers to prove that soaps containing triclosan are of a benefit.

According to recent studies, this may be a long shot. Reports say that triclosan resistance from continued use of antibacterial soaps is making some bacteria immune to the effects of the supposed antibacterial benefits.

germs

Furthermore, some strains of samonella (Salmonella enterica) have repeatedly tested drug resistant to antibiotics because of repeated exposure to triclosan. As many as 56% of tested human and animal isolates were found to be multi-drug resistant to antibiotics.

The use of antibacterial soaps is compounding the problem of antibiotic resistance. With over-prescribing of antibiotics, plus the use of antibiotic compounds in our meat supply, adding ingredients like  increased triclosan use is sending our immune and hormonal systems into a tailspin.

A report in the Oxford Medical Journals states:  “Studies have shown that soaps containing triclosan within the range of concentrations commonly used (0.1%–0.45% wt/vol) were no more effective than plain soap at preventing infectious illness symptoms and reducing bacterial levels on the hands. Several laboratory studies demonstrated evidence of triclosan-adapted cross-resistance to antibiotics among different species of bacteria.”

So, Grandma was right!  Wash your hands – with plain soap and water!

Bill Maher: “Corporations Own This Country.”

In the following video, Bill Maher pegs it about Monsanto and corporate America:

As Maher points out, 70% of our food comes from GMO crops.  Only 5% in Europe comes from GMO foods.  China, of all places, which has sold tainted baby food, pet food that kills, has a far different stance on GMOs than the U.S. does.

Monsanto, on the sly, has gotten a rider inserted into the 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill  (H.R. 5973)  which gives the biotech industry more power to override provisions in GMO approvals.  TELL CONGRESS we cannot allow Monsanto and the biotech industry to continue to:

  • Grow food which is sprayed with chemicals that poisons our world with carcinogenic ingredients, which are known to cause fetal abnormalities, disrupt endocrine systems in humans, kill beneficial insects and damage the ecosystem worldwide.
  • Continue to threaten farmers
  • Violates the right OF farmers to grow the crops of their choice
  • Give Monsanto & the biotech industry sweeping powers to stop any legislation against them.

Michael Taylor’s appointment to the FDA was a travesty!  President Obama made one of the worst decisions of his presidency when Taylor was made food czar!  His ties TO Monsanto should have excluded him from being appointed because of conflict of interest.

Monsanto & Mitt Romney: Vote for HIM, Get More of THEM

Mitt Romney has a long history with Monsanto

Mitt Romney has  very distinct ties to Monsanto.  From an environmental, health and food standpoint, this is a very disturbing fact concerning the 2012 election.

From his days at Boston’s  Bain & Company in the 1970s, Romney helped turn Monsanto’s image from a chemical colossus into the genetic engineering giant.  Former Monsanto CEO, John Hanley was very close to Mitt, who concentrated on molding Monsanto’s image.  Hanley also helped with Romney’s career at Bain, which prompted Romney’s boss, Bill Bain, to form “Bain Capital” to keep Romney in the fold.

Bain’s work with Monsanto included a campaign of whitewashing negative influences on the effects of Round-Up.  Monsanto’s management was not focused on the long-term environmental impacts but (no surprise here) on the bottom line of upcoming  financial quarters. The switch to “life science” products for Monsanto was a ploy to placate naysayers and environmentalists.  By sanitizing their image, this would  appear that Monsanto was actually interested in  doing something for the planet and its people.  Nothing could be further from the truth!

We all know the history of Monsanto:  Round Up, GMO products, bovine growth hormone, genetic engineering, PCBs and Agent Orange.  The frightening fact here is that  If Mitt Romney is elected, Monsanto will sink its hooks even deeper into the American government and the food system.

Read–> the Mother Jones article on how Romney has helped Monsanto!

Despite the overwhelming evidence about the dangers of GMOs from independent studies, Monsanto has gone to great lengths to disavow this.  It’s currently battling California’s Proposition 37 on labeling GMO ingredients in food.  Rest assured, if Romney IS elected, we will see a rise in efforts to approve many more GMO crops and appoint Monsanto-friendly politicians in government. As an environmental food activist, this frightens me!

“Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA’s job.” ~former communications manager for Monsanto.

FDA approvals are a joke to people like myself who’ve long known the inside track on influence in government agencies.  Monsanto has written  riders into laws to benefit itself, bullied, threatened and wormed its way into the FDA.  The FDA stamp of approval is worthless when it comes to GMOs.

Mitt Romney’s appointed agricultural advisory committee  consists of Monsanto cronies. Some have been heavily involved with the marketing of GMOs like Chris Policinski of Land-O-Lakes, and Chuck Connor (National Council of Farmer Cooperatives)  has pushed for the approval of GMO alfalfa in 2010. Another member of this panel is Kate Smith or Osborn Barr, Monsanto’s PR people.     Mike Johanns, George Bush’s agricultural secretary and head of the USDA was in power when Monsanto’s sugar beets and alfalfa were approved without the required environmental impact studies. Additionally he’s made himself available to the political machine’s movers and shakers which run Missouri, Monsanto’s home state.

Mitt Romney has surrounded himself with supporters of Monsanto in government and agriculture for well over 20 years.   He’s sure to continue this into his administration.  God help us all if he’s elected because it will be the beginning of the end for many things.  The organic industry will be adversely affected.   Big Ag will probably be empowered to put more small farmers out of business.  By pandering to the food industry,  undoubtedly food safety  will suffer and, most frighteningly of all…,  Monsanto will come closer to its dream of total control of our food system.
